How We Made a Video Promoting the Friends of the German Shepherd Dog Welfare Fund

Ad IQ recently created a short video promoting the Friends of the German Shepherd Dog Welfare Fund, a club for fellow dog owners and a charity supporting German Shepherds. The video was made using Photoshop and After Effects, and we wanted to share a bit about the process of making it.

Photoshop

We start with a simple storyboard and then create some graphics in Photoshop. We used 2D cel-style animation of a dog sitting to add interest to a key scene and to add traditional movement to a predominately slide-style show.

After Effects

The graphics were brought into After Effects and some text transitions, motion blur, and other effects were added, including an animated texture overlay and little drop shadows to give it all a cardboard cut out theme. We also created a multi-shape layer of the final German Shepherd using solid colours and masks, which were keyframed to give the appearance of the head turning – it was subtle but added a nice bit of visual stimulus at the end.

The Final Product

We’re really happy with the final product, it was done on a shoe-string budget and the client was happy for us to experiment with the graphics, we hope it helps to promote the Friends of the German Shepherd Dog Welfare Fund. Tips for Making a Video

Here are a few tips for making a video like this:

  • Use a simple and effective design. The hero image in this video is just a dog sitting, but it’s effective because it’s clear and easy to understand.
  • Use After Effects to add some extra polish. After Effects can be used to add some great effects to your videos, such as text transitions, motion blur, and more.
  • Don’t be afraid to experiment. The best way to learn how to make videos is to just experiment and see what works. So don’t be afraid to try new things and see what happens.
